Case Detail

1. Project Background & Customer Pain Points

This field application was carried out in a deep directional well project on the Middle East onshore desert block, featuring extreme working conditions including high ambient temperature up to 55℃, continuous sand erosion, severe rig vibration and cyclic pressure fluctuation. The drilling operation adopted high-density oil-based mud with high solid cuttings, which places strict requirements on the hose’s heat resistance, wear resistance and fatigue resistance. The customer’s original rotary drilling hoses suffered frequent premature failures: the average service life was only 7–8 months, with outer rubber cracking and peeling caused by high temperature and sand abrasion. Joint leakage often led to unplanned rig shutdowns, and repeated bending and pressure surges easily caused steel wire delamination and fatigue damage. Frequent replacements and unexpected downtime brought huge operational losses, driving the customer to seek high-standard, long-service-life API 7K drilling hoses for upgrading.

2. Core Technical Solution

To solve the harsh on-site problems, the LT301D API 7K Grade D rotary drilling hose was adopted with full-dimensional structural and material optimization. The inner tube is made of high-performance HNBR rubber, featuring excellent heat resistance and oil mud swelling resistance, effectively preventing inner layer damage and medium penetration under high-temperature mud delivery. The multi-layer high-tensile spiral steel wire reinforcement structure provides outstanding pressure resistance and anti-fatigue performance, absorbing continuous rig vibration and frequent bending displacement during directional drilling. The custom outer rubber cover is specially formulated to resist high temperature, sand abrasion and ozone aging, adapting to long-term desert open-air operation. Equipped with integrally forged Fig1502 hammer union ends and full-flow design, each hose is factory pressure-tested at 1.5 times the working pressure and certified with API 7K and ABS Q1, fully compliant with global onshore and offshore drilling standards.

3. On-site Operation & Monitoring Process

The rotary drilling hose was installed between the standpipe and top drive, serving as the key flexible pipeline for high-pressure drilling mud circulation. During continuous drilling operations, the actual working pressure ranged from 3200psi to 4200psi, with a peak pressure of 4800psi and maximum mud temperature of 102℃. The hose endured long-term cyclic pressure, dynamic bending and mechanical vibration. A standardized inspection system was implemented, including weekly visual appearance checks and bi-annual pressure retests and thickness measurements. After 12 months of uninterrupted field service, the hose maintained stable performance without leakage, cracking, bulging or steel wire delamination, achieving zero failure under extreme desert drilling conditions.

4. Application Results & Customer Benefits

The upgraded rotary drilling hose delivered remarkable performance improvements and economic benefits. The service life increased by 40% compared with traditional products, greatly reducing replacement frequency. Zero leakage and zero unplanned downtime effectively eliminated mud spill risks and improved on-site HSE management. The project avoided multiple emergency shutdowns and saved 7 days of rig standby time, significantly cutting costs on spare parts, labor and rig idle loss. With reliable field performance, the LT301D hose was officially designated as the standard matching product for all rigs in the block. It has become a mature and preferred solution for high-temperature desert deep well drilling projects worldwide.
