Ceramic Lined Hose for Open Pit Mine Tailings Slurry Transport
An open-pit mining operation in Southeast Asia faced severe wear issues on tailings transfer lines. The pipeline carried high-density slurry mixed with hard quartz and rock fragments at continuous flow velocity. Standard rubber slurry hoses installed at elbow sections suffered fast inner-wall erosion, only lasting 2–3 months before replacement. Every change required draining the pipeline and stopping production, resulting in considerable lost output plus high labor and spare part costs. The mine sought a flexible hose option with drastically improved abrasion resistance.
We supplied ceramic lined rubber hoses for these high-wear segments. The hose interior uses 92% alumina hexagonal ceramic tiles vulcanized securely within the rubber body. Multi-layer fabric reinforcement handles operating pressure, while the outer rubber cover protects against outdoor weathering and UV radiation. The design retains rubber flexibility to absorb pipeline vibration and accommodate minor bending, unlike rigid ceramic pipe which risks cracking under movement. Each hose undergoes hydrostatic pressure testing prior to delivery, with dimensions customized to fit the existing pipeline layout.
The hoses were put into continuous 24-hour service on curved tailings pipeline sections. Working pressure stayed between 1.2 MPa and 1.8 MPa. After eight months of uninterrupted slurry transport, site inspections confirmed no tile peeling, detachment or cracking. Only minor even wear appeared on the ceramic surface. The hose maintained its flexibility with zero leakage or bulging. It effectively absorbed vibration from constant solid particle impact.
Field results showed service life more than four times longer than conventional rubber hoses. Reduced wear extended replacement cycles and eliminated most unplanned downtime. Overall slurry throughput improved, and total expenditure on spare parts and on-site maintenance decreased noticeably. Based on this successful trial, the mine planned to retrofit all heavily abrasive sections with ceramic lined hoses during coming expansion work. This application demonstrates ceramic lined flexible hose as a practical cost-effective solution for mining slurry transport with heavy abrasive solids.
