HDPE Hose Floats Application Case Study for Southeast Asia Offshore Dredging Project
1. Project Background & Customer Problems
This case is from a large-scale offshore sand reclamation and dredging project in Southeast Asia. The construction area is exposed to open sea conditions with intense UV radiation, frequent wave surges and high salinity seawater corrosion. A long-distance floating dredging pipeline was used for continuous transportation of high-density sand-water slurry. Previously, the customer adopted traditional thin-shell floats filled with ordinary foam. Under long-term wave impact and marine aging, the floats easily suffered shell cracking, water infiltration and buoyancy loss. These failures led to pipeline sinking, hose torsion and abnormal abrasion, resulting in frequent pipeline shutdowns. Offshore replacement and maintenance brought high construction costs and delayed project progress. The client required durable, high-buoyancy and anti-aging hose floats for long-term open-sea operation.
2. Product Technical Solution
Heavy-duty split-type HDPE hose floats were selected to adapt to the severe offshore environment. The float shell adopts thickened high-density polyethylene made by one-piece rotational molding technology, delivering outstanding impact resistance, crack resistance, UV resistance and seawater corrosion resistance. The interior is filled with high-density closed-cell hydrophobic foam. It maintains permanent buoyancy and will not absorb water even when the outer shell gets slight scratches. The two-piece snap-on structure enables fast installation without heavy lifting equipment and greatly improves on-site assembly efficiency. With well-distributed buoyancy and arc-shaped hose protection surface, the floats effectively reduce hose bending stress and prevent excessive torsion and pipeline abrasion. Custom sizes are available for DN200-DN800 dredging hoses, with a design service life up to 15 years in marine environments.
3. On-site Operation & Actual Working Condition
These hose floats were mounted on the main floating dredging pipeline to provide full-line floating support during 24-hour continuous dredging and reclamation work. The construction site faced typical open-sea challenges including 3–4 meter wave surges, constant seawater scouring and strong sunlight exposure. Throughout the service period, all hose floats kept stable floating height and balanced pipeline tension. No shell cracking, deformation, water ingress or buoyancy attenuation was observed. The floating pipeline remained straight and stable without sinking, twisting or overlapping. Regular site inspections verified that the floats buffered wave impact, reduced pipeline swing and protected rubber dredging hoses against fatigue damage and abnormal friction.
4. Application Effect & Customer Value
After switching to upgraded HDPE hose floats, the project obtained obvious improvements in stability, safety and cost control. The floating pipeline system achieved long-term stable operation with zero float failure, effectively removing unplanned shutdowns caused by sunken pipelines. The service cycle of floating hoses and accessories was greatly extended, cutting frequent offshore replacement and maintenance work. Stable buoyancy and anti-swing performance optimized overall slurry transportation efficiency and guaranteed continuous construction progress. Satisfied with the field performance, the client confirmed long-term bulk procurement and will promote this hose float solution to other offshore reclamation and dredging projects, forming a standardized supporting system for marine floating pipelines.
